Does the idea of your dog’s stinky kisses make you wince?
Do you cringe from your cat’s foul breath?
Does your bunny take longer to chew and occasionally drop food?

Bad teeth may be to blame! Few people are able to brush their pet’s teeth regularly, so food and plaque continue to build up on them until they cause serious health issues.

Did you know the bacteria in the mouth can cause heart and kidney disease if left untreated? In smaller dogs and rabbits, bad teeth can weaken the jaw and make it much easier to break from normal chewing and playing.

“But my dog chews bones and hard food! He can’t have bad teeth!” Pets often get snacks and people leftovers that are stickier than their normal food and hasten plaque formation. We have to brush our teeth twice a day and see a dentist twice a year, but people still get cavities! Pets get much less daily dental care than we do and are more likely to get things trapped in between their teeth. Real bones often break teeth, leading to painful infections.

Non-anesthetic dental cleaning is available for some pets. If your pet is calm when having its mouth examined and is only expecting a routine dental exam, this may be an option for your pet. If there is any painful work expected or your pet is nervous, we may recommend a dental cleaning with a gentle anesthetic to make them more comfortable.

If you are concerned about your pet’s teeth, call our office today and set up an evaluation to see what option is best for your pet!
